Rock Of Ages [The Movie] in theaters now

Saw Rock Of Ages [the movie] today. i'm giving it a thumbs-up. Or better still a head-bang & metal sign. i have not seen the live version of this musical but feel secure in saying the cinematic interpretation lacks for nothing by comparison.

The wardrobe, props, hair & make-up capture the 'hair band' era perfectly. The luggage that Julianne Hough's character Sherrie has as she's making her way from small town middle America to L.A. --- i had that luggage [when i lived in DC]. That was 1 of many nostalgia invoking moments for me. The star pin on her jean jacket---i had a similar one---my rhinestone one had shooting stars and was not a cut-out star but close enough to make me think 'oh wow i remember that pin'.

Hough's Sherrie and her leading man Drew [Diego Boneta] are a hopeful & sweet parallel image to Malin Akerman's Rolling Stone reporter Constance Sack & Tom Cruise's rocker Stacee Jaxx [more on Mr Cruise later].

Russell Brand was born to play Lonny---Bourbon club M.C. and right hand-man to the club's owner Dennis, played with humor, warmth and not a trace of anger management issues by Alec Baldwin. They have great chemistry.

Paul Giamotti's record of always being an interesting scene stealer holds.

Bryan Cranston is a serviceable comic foil as L.A. county mayor Mike Whitmore. As his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones' Patricia 'Patti-cake' Whitmore is one of the best fictional functioning drunks i've seen since the real-life ones i knew in my formative years. Her performance is subtle and 100% accurate. Anyone even casually acquainted with the type can tell she's a boozer well before the scene where she's mixing a spritzer for herself. Even more impressive are Ms Zeta-Jones' dancing and singing.

And while we're on the subject of dancing: bravo to choreographer Mia Michaels and all the film's dancers. Particularly for the scenes at the Venus Club---those ladies veritably defy gravity.

Cameos by real-life rockers make for fun 'ooh look who's in that scene' moments. i'm not going to specify who or when because i think it's better to experience the moment as it happens.

Some reviewers of this film's story have said they don't understand the motive for the Whitmore's beef with metal/rock n roll in general, and the patrons performers workers and owner of the Bourbon Club [clearly an homage to the Whiskey-a-GoGo] in particular. i'm guessing they are either too young to remember or have forgotten about Tipper Gore's crusade for censoring lyrics and/or labeling vinyl much in the same way that movies have lettered ratings.

Moving on: Mary J Blige---sooo good. Of course i knew i'd be swept away by her singing---she moves me, gives me goose bumps every time i hear her gift---but the woman's got acting chops too. G'on witcha baad self Mary.

Tom Cruise. Two thoughts always come to my mind when i think of him: discipline and focus. For me, never has he embodied those qualities more than in his portrayal of Stacee Jaxx. A bit of Jim Morrison. A dash of Elvis. A sprinkle of Axl. Mix with an amalgam of every pop/rock/metal god who's ever nailed a groupie or belted out a power ballad & voila! Stacee Jaxx. As Jaxx Mr Cruise is sexy introspective philosophical vulgar ridiculous heartbreaking heartaching funny AND the man can sing. Cruise's performance is in a word: good. No i need two words: Phenomenally good.

Thanks to a perk from Klout in partnership with T-mobile, it only cost hubby & i a total of $3.00 to see this flick but i strongly recommend the movie Rock Of Ages even if you "must pay full freight". It'll be worth every penny.

TNT’s Falling Skies Returns for Second Season Sunday June 17th 9:00 p.m. ET/PT

Press Release: Mystery Deepens for Survivors of Massive Alien Invasion

As TNT’s Falling Skies Returns for Second Season

Basic Cable's #1 New Series Returns June 17

The wait is nearly over. TNT’s epic drama Falling Skies, basic cable's #1 new series of last year, is set to return with a two-hour premiere on Sunday, June 17 2012 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT).

This season will continue its extraordinary story about life and survival in the wake of a catastrophic alien invasion. Noah Wyle (ER) stars as Tom Mason, a former college professor and father of three, who has become an unlikely leader for the 2nd Massachusetts civilian resistance group.

Falling Skies comes to TNT from DreamWorks Television and is executive-produced by Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Television heads Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. Remi Aubuchon and Greg Beeman are also executive producers. Fans can find the latest Falling Skies news online at fallingskies.com and via twitter @FallingSkiesTNT.

Falling Skies chronicles the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the nine months since the initial invasion, the few remaining survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. Each day is a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people in their care while also engaging in an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien force, whose nature and purpose remains a mystery.

"The objective this season was to ramp everything up: the stakes, the personal drama, the tension," says executive producer Remi Aubuchon. "If the first season was about our characters trying to cope with the trauma of having their world turned upside down, this season is about taking action and fighting back. Our heroes of the 2nd Mass will be faced with many challenges and obstacles throughout the season. Some will not survive the journey. But in the end, those that do will be much stronger and ready for anything."

As the second season of Falling Skies opens, three months have passed since Tom went willingly with the aliens in one of their ships. Nobody has seen or heard from him during this time, and his absence has taken its toll on his sons. Tom hoped that by agreeing to a dialogue with the invaders, he would not only free his son Ben from the invaders’ influence but also get a better picture of the aliens’ overall plan.

Many lives have been lost since Tom left, but the survivors of the 2nd Mass still struggle on with courage and resilience. Ben and his older brother, Hal, have stepped up as fighters but quickly butt heads as they both seek to secure their roles as leaders in their father’s absence. Hal has developed a strong, if not flirtatious, friendship with former renegade Maggie. Ben, meanwhile, has become a particularly strong soldier. But even though his prowess is a huge asset to the 2nd Mass, he has an independent streak that could place others in harm's way.

Amidst the turmoil, Tom’s youngest son, Matt, struggles to find his place in a world torn apart by war and destruction. Also in Tom's absence, Anne has become more of a maternal figure for the Mason boys. And Weaver, the commander of the 2nd Mass, continues to lead his fighters into battle against the aliens. The unknown effect of the harness continues to be an unfolding mystery and the 2nd Mass will discover the transformative powers the harness has on humans.

Throughout the season we will also be introduced to more mysterious alien creatures. One of these creatures has a connection to Tom and Ben that will be surprising. The survivors will have a nomadic existence as they march toward Charleston, S.C., where they hope to meet up with other remaining existence groups and begin to rebuild society.

Joining Falling Skies as guest stars this season are Brandon Jay McLaren (The Killing), who plays resident engineer and technology expert Jamil Dexter, and Terry O'Quinn (Lost), who will play Arthur Manchester, Tom's mentor and former professor, in the two-part season finale.

Moon Bloodgood (Terminator Salvation) also stars as Anne Glass, a pediatrician who works with the survivors to help them cope with the traumatic upheaval in their lives. Will Patton (Armageddon, TNT’s Into the West) plays Weaver, a fierce military leader of the resistance and Tom’s commanding officer.

The series also stars Drew Roy (Secretariat) as Hal, Tom’s oldest son and a growing fighter in the resistance movement; Maxim Knight (Brothers & Sisters) as Matt, Tom’s youngest son; Connor Jessup (The Saddle Club) as Ben, Tom’s son who was captured by aliens and has since returned to the group; and Seychelle Gabriel (Weeds) as Lourdes, an orphaned pre-med student who helps Anne in the group’s makeshift medical clinic.

Mpho Koaho (Rookie Blue) and Peter Shinkoda (The L Word) play Anthony and Dai, two resistance fighters in the 2nd Mass.; Colin Cunningham (Living in Your Car) is John Pope, the head of a gang of marauders called the Berserkers; and Sarah Sanguin Carter (Shark) is Maggie, a wary survivor from Pope’s gang.

In its debut season, TNT’s Falling Skies averaged more than 6.9 million viewers, 3.3 million adults 18-49 and 3.7 million adults 25-54 to rank as basic cable’s #1 new series of 2011.

On the international front, Falling Skies premiered in more than 115 global markets, achieving hit status in the United Kingdom, Australia and Latin America, among others. The premiere of Falling Skies also ranks as the biggest series launch ever for TNT networks in Spain, Germany and Austria.

The Soul Man Starring Cedric The Entertainer & Niecy Nash Premieres On TVLand 10:00pm Wednesday June 20 2012

Press Release: TV LAND BEGINS PRODUCTION ON “THE SOUL MAN,” STARRING CEDRIC “THE ENTERTAINER” AND NIECY NASH
Network’s Newest Original Sitcom Premieres
Wednesday, June 20 At 10PM ET/PT

Santa Monica, CA – April 27, 2012 – TV Land is giving one of the original “Kings of Comedy” his own sitcom! Laugh-out-loud comedians Cedric “The Entertainer” and Niecy Nash star in the network’s newest original series, “The Soul Man” (formerly known as “Have Faith”), which begins production this week for a total of 12 episodes, it was announced today by Keith Cox, executive vice president, development and original programming, TV Land.

“The Soul Man” premieres Wednesday, June 20 at 10pm ET/PT, immediately followed by the season two premiere of TV Land’s hit sitcom, “The Exes,” which stars Donald Faison (“Scrubs”), Wayne Knight (“Seinfeld”), David Alan Basche (“The Starter Wife”), Kelly Stables (“Two and a Half Men”) and Kristen Johnston (“3rd Rock From The Sun”).

“The Soul Man” revolves around R&B superstar-turned-minister Reverend Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine (played by Cedric) who was living the high life in Las Vegas at the top of the music charts (see the video for his 80’s hit, “Sex Wichoo” here) when he gets the calling to go from soul singer to soul saver.

Relocating to St. Louis with his wife, Lolli (Nash) and his daughter, Lyric (Jazz Raycole) to take over the preaching duties in his father’s church, his family is not exactly eager to give up the fabulous superstar life for a humble one.

The Reverend Boyce character originally appeared in a season two episode of “Hot in Cleveland” and a spinoff was developed by Cedric and “Hot in Cleveland” creator Suzanne Martin. The comedy also stars John Beasley (“Everwood”) as Boyce’s father, Barton; Wesley Jonathan (“What I Like About You”) as his brother, Stamps; and Jazz Raycole (“My Wife and Kids”) as his daughter.

“We are beyond thrilled to have Cedric, Niecy and the whole cast become part of the ever-growing TV Land family,” said Cox. “We know that Cedric and Niecy’s chemistry coupled with a top-notch comedic cast will definitely make this sitcom pop.”

Cedric and Martin will serve as executive producers for “The Soul Man,” along with Eric Rhone and Emmy® Award-winner Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner of Hazy Mills Productions, who also executive produce “Hot in Cleveland.” Keith Cox and Larry W. Jones will be executive producers for TV Land. Phoef Sutton (“Cheers”) is the showrunner and Stan Lathan (“The Steve Harvey Show”) serves as the director. The series is filmed in front of a live studio audience.
