Review of: Steven Spielberg's Lincoln

Tony Kushner's screenplay, adapted from historian Doris Kearns Goodman's book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, is the granite strong foundation for director Steven Spielberg's, Lincoln. Beautifully photographed, it is at turns poignant, funny, and educational without being dull.

Daniel Day-Lewis in the title role, and Sally Field as Mary 'Molly' Todd-Lincoln, head a phenomenal cast who re-create the players of the era of our nation's civil war, and our 16th president without a single false step. The viewer is made privy to the horrors of war, the often ridiculous but necessary nature of legislature, and an intimate view of a commander in chief as a husband and father.

Even if it is in the aftermath of a tragedy, i am a firm believer in the adage 'everything happens for a reason'. Liam Neeson was originally cast to portray Lincoln, but later declined the role, purportedly of the belief he was not the right age. It was speculated by others at the time that the recently widowed Neeson was not ready to return to work. If the latter reasoning is accurate, while i am not for a moment suggesting Natasha Richardson's death was a good thing, i can't say that i am disappointed that Day-Lewis was the ultimate choice for the part. Day-Lewis was born to play this role. Every gesture, stride, and utterance is perfect.

There has been lots of buzz, and rightly so, about Tommy Lee Jones' performance as abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens. But there is an abundance of great cameos and character actors throughout. i don't want to give away too much about the specific performers, but i will give a tease: fans of Mad Men's portrayer of Lane Pryce and Justified's Boyd Crowder are in for a nice surprise.

Director Spielberg's pacing is so good the 2 & 1/2 hr running time never drags and did not for a moment feel too long. There are other choices he makes that make for an enriching movie going experience. One scene in particular is beautiful in it's subtlety. The President is meeting with his Secretary of State [played by David Strathairn] They are standing by a bookcase and Day-Lewis' face is reflected in it's glass. It's not a big moment, but the visual deftly conveys the subtext of the conversation---the duality and dilemma of doing what is right even if it must be achieved by doing something that may ethically be wrong.

Spielberg is one of the few directors who can tell a story whose outcome we already know, and still captivate and surprise us. i won't go into more detail as to what prompted that reaction, but when you see his Lincoln you will understand.

Matt Damon Hijacks Jimmy Kimmel Live special primetime encore, TUESDAY, JANUARY 29 at 10:00 p.m., ET.

Friday, January 25, 2013. ABC Television Network. PRESS RELEASE - PRESS RELEASE - ENTERTAINMENT - MATT DAMON HIJACKS JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE AND BRINGS THE SHOW TO PRIMETIME (1/29)

Last night Jimmy Kimmel's arch nemesis, Oscar winner Matt Damon, exacted his revenge following a decade of torture by hijacking Kimmel's late-night show and renaming it "Jimmy Kimmel Sucks." Damon showed Kimmel how it's done by packing his one-evening-only late-night turn with comedy and a cavalcade of A-list stars. On the heels of the ratings success of the episode, it will have a special primetime encore, TUESDAY, JANUARY 29 at 10:00 p.m., ET. (Rebroadcast. OAD: 1/24/13)

Note: This program replaces "Body of Proof: Mind Games."

Matt Damon Hijacks Jimmy Kimmel

Damon replaced Kimmel's longtime sidekick, Guillermo, with legendary actor Andy Garcia, his best childhood friend and bandleader, Cleto, with multi-Grammy winner Sheryl Crow, and packed his couch with such Hollywood notables as Nicole Kidman, Gary Oldman, Amy Adams, Reese Witherspoon and Demi Moore, plus special guest appearances by comedians Robin Williams and Sarah Silverman. Even Ben Affleck stopped by to participate in the big night, though his allegiance was torn between childhood friend Damon and former paramour Kimmel.

Featuring Matt Damon's takeover of Kimmel's late-night show on Thursday (1/24/13), ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" ranked as the No. 1 program in late-night in both Households (2.92 rating) and Adults 18-49 (1.23 rating) in Nielsen's 56 Metered Markets. Thursday's telecast marked "JKL's" best yet since moving to 11:35 p.m. in HH, and its 2nd-strongest in young adults. In the key Adult 18-49 demo, "JKL" beat NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" by 62% and CBS' "The Late Show with David Letterman" by 120%. In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, "JKL" ranked No. 1 in 9 of the Top 10 U.S. markets in Adults 18-49, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

"JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE" (weeknights, 11:35 p.m., ET)

Jimmy Kimmel serves as host and executive producer of Emmy Award-nominated "Jimmy Kimmel Live," the ABC Television Network's late-night talk show. Now in its tenth season, "JKL" is packed with hilarious comedy bits and features a diverse lineup of guests including celebrities, athletes, musicians, comedians and humorous human interest subjects. Every night Kimmel delivers his up-to-the minute take on the latest news and pop culture topics from the day's events in his monologue, and has recently welcomed such notables as Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, Tom Cruise, Robert Pattinson, Katy Perry, Will Farrell, Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Charlize Theron, John Krasinski, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Biel, Justin Bieber, Jessica Simpson, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Andy Samberg, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Charlie Sheen, Chris Pine, Jeremy Renner, Jada Pinkett Smith, Josh Brolin, Russell Brand, Woody Harrelson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

"Jimmy Kimmel Live," broadcasts from Disney's El Capitan Theater, located on Hollywood Boulevard in the heart of L.A.'s star-studded Walk of Fame. Kimmel showcases this illustrious location's unique character throughout his show by regularly interacting with the local "Super Heroes" parading along the boulevard and challenging passersby to participate in various comedy bits. He has also created many one-of-a-kind concert experiences, closing down Hollywood streets around his studio to hold musical block party events with artists such as Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z and Depeche Mode, as well as special outdoor and lobby performances by Adele, Linkin Park, Justin Timberlake, Drake, Tony Bennett, Pitbull, Britney Spears, Lady Antebellum, Usher, Lenny Kravitz, Brad Paisley, Lil Wayne, Phoenix, 50 Cent, No Doubt and Dave Matthews Band.

Jimmy Kimmel and Jill Leiderman serve as executive producers. Jason Schrift, Douglas DeLuca and Erin Irwin serve as co-executive producers. TNT's Dallas Ready to Heat Up Winter with New Round of
Passion, Feuds, Double-Crosses and Shady Alliances

#1 New Drama with Key Demos Returns Monday, Jan. 28

TNT is going to usher in the New Year with a whole new wave of back-stabbing, plot-scheming, blackmailing fun as the hit drama series Dallas returns for its second season.

The Warner Horizon Television–produced drama burst onto the scene this past summer, averaging 6.1 million viewers which ranks as basic cable’s #1 new drama with key adult demos for the year-to-date. The 15-episode second season is set to launch Monday, Jan. 28, with back-to-back episodes beginning at 9 p.m. (ET/

TNT's Dallas centers on the Ewing clan, an enormously wealthy Texas family whose sibling rivalries, romantic betrayals, corruption and even murder are truly legendary. The exciting drama brings back three iconic stars from the original Dallas: Patrick Duffy as Bobby Ewing, Linda Gray as Sue Ellen Ewing and Larry Hagman as J.R. Ewing.

They are joined by the next generation of Ewings, who take ambition and deception to a new level. Josh Henderson is John Ross, the son of J.R. and Sue Ellen Ewing, while Jesse Metcalfe is Christopher, Bobby’s adopted son. Jordana Brewster also stars as Elena Ramos, John Ross’ girlfriend and Christopher's former fiancée, while Julie Gonzalo is Rebecca Sutter, Christopher’s wife. Brenda Strong stars as Bobby’s wife, Ann.

This season three new series regulars will join the cast. Mitch Pileggi, who guest-starred in the first season, plays Harris Ryland, Ann’s manipulative and cunning ex-husband. Emma Bell is Emma Brown, a sheltered beauty whose father has taught her to distrust the world around her. And Kuno Becker is Drew Ramos, Elena’s troubled brother who returns to Southfork to continue drilling on his father’s land.

Shot on location in the title city, Dallas comes to TNT from Warner Horizon Television, with writer Cynthia Cidre and Michael M. Robin serving as executive producers. TNT’s Dallas is based upon the series created by David Jacobs.

Season 1 Recap (spoiler alert)

During the first season of TNT's Dallas, the decades-long rivalry between J.R. and Bobby flared up again when John Ross began working on a scheme to drill oil on the Ewings' Southfork ranch. Bobby, determined to honor his late mother's wishes, refused to allow for the drilling. But Bobby's health problems, including a form of stomach cancer, forced him to consider selling the family's property to a conservancy. Unfortunately, Bobby was unaware that the entire deal was a ruse by J.R., who recently
emerged after a stint in an assisted-living facility and who is now more determined than ever to take control of Southfork.

Meanwhile, Christopher had recently returned to Dallas with wife-to-be Rebecca Sutter, causing some awkward moments with his former fiancée, Elena Ramos, the daughter of Southfork's housekeeper. Christopher and Rebecca's marriage faced early problems when Christopher discovered Rebecca was partially responsible for his untimely breakup with Elena, and he later uncovered evidence that Rebecca was collaborating with Tommy Sutter (Callard Harris), a man posing to be her brother in order to rip off the Ewing family. Rebecca wound up shooting and killing Tommy when he threatened to harm her unborn twins.

John Ross, meanwhile, found his own world crashing down when his girlfriend, Elena, discovered his attempts to take Southfork from Bobby and Christopher. John Ross was later framed for murdering a
woman claiming to be Marta Del Sol (Leonor Varela), with whom he'd been in collusion. Sue Ellen and Ann each made deals with Ann's scheming ex-husband, Harris Ryland, in order to make the family's legal problems go away. The timing was particularly bad for Sue Ellen, who is running for governor of Texas, and especially troubling for Ann, who holds a painful memory about a daughter she and Ryland may have had together.

In the end, Ann managed to get Ryland on tape trying to blackmail her. Bobby's medical problems began to escalate. Elena went running into Christopher's arms after realizing John Ross is just as deceptive, scheming and power-hungry as his father. And Rebecca, dumped by Christopher when he learned she was lying about being related to Tommy, went to meet her father – longtime Ewing enemy and Bobby's one-time father-in-law, Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval).

Season 2 Preview

In the second season of Dallas, Sue Ellen's run for governor will be threatened by the secret that she bribed a medical examiner to help get John Ross off the hook for murder. Ryland will come to Ann claiming to have news about her daughter. Christopher will head to Des Moines to find the real Becky Sutter, while the woman he married will start to show her true colors as Cliff Barnes' daughter. J.R. will team up with John Ross to take over Sue Ellen's loan to Elena, giving her total control over Christopher
and John Ross' new startup company, Ewing Energies. And that's in just the first episode…

Sundance Film Festival The Day One Press Conference 2013 FULL VIDEO

The 2013 Festival takes place January 17-27 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

Sundance Institute Artist Services Program Expands Self-Distribution Opportunities to Filmmakers Supported by Six Additional Organizations.

Artist Services Announces Collaboration with REELHOUSE, VHX, VIMEO and TUGG, Offering Filmmakers Additional Platforms and Tools

Los Angeles, CA — Keri Putnam, Executive Director of Sundance Institute, today announced that the Institute’s Artist Services program – which provides Institute artists with exclusive opportunities for creative self-distribution, marketing and financing solutions for their work – has expanded to include selected films supported by one foundation and five nonprofit organizations. Additionally, these organizations will join with Sundance Institute in continuing to shape the program and the services it offers.

The Bertha Foundation, BRITDOC, Cinereach, Film Independent, the Independent Filmmaker Project and the San Francisco Film Society will each select films that they have supported to receive access to best-in-class digital distribution arrangements that have been negotiated by Sundance Institute Artist Services. These services are targeted for filmmakers who intend to pursue an independent release plan. In support of these filmmakers, the Institute will curate submitted films and work closely each organization, the filmmakers, and exclusive aggregation partner Cinedigm – New Video to develop independent distribution strategies. Furthermore, each organization will work with the Institute to expand educational opportunities to their alumni building on the model of the Artist Services Workshop that takes place each year during the Sundance Film Festival.

The Day One Press Conference of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

L-R: Salt Lake Tribune columnist Sean Means, Robert Redford, Sundance Institute Executive Director Keri Putnam, and Director of the Sundance Film Festival John Cooper

“Now more than ever filmmakers need to be creative and entrepreneurial in order to get their stories to audiences. Sundance Institute embraces cross-organizational collaboration in an effort to increase the collective impact on the field; it is in this spirit that we welcome the input of our colleagues to further help us shape the Artist Services program,” said Putnam. “Our hope is that it contributes to the long-term sustainability of independent film careers and a greater diversity of films reaching audiences each year.”

With the addition of new partners Tugg, Reelhouse, VHX, and Vimeo, Sundance Institute is expanding its suite of digital platforms and tools offered by Artist Services. Current partners include ten digital retailers as well as Kickstarter , GoWatchIt, and Topspin Media. Tugg is a web-platform that allows filmmakers and fans to create screening events at their local theater. Direct-to-fan platforms Reelhouse, VHX and Vimeo, like longtime Artist Services collaborator Topspin Media, will work with Sundance Institute and its interested supported filmmakers to develop opportunities to sell their films and merchandise directly to end users. All four new partners will participate in the annual Artist Services Workshop on Monday, January 21, at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

Since the Artist Services program launched in January 2011, more than $3.2 million has been raised for nearly 100 Institute artists’ projects via Kickstarter and more than 40 films are now accessible by the public on a variety of platforms and storefronts.

The exclusive aggregation partner for distribution participating in the Artist Services program is Cinedigm – New Video. The Artist Services initiative is made possible by The Bertha Foundation. These deals were brokered via pro bono legal services generously provided by law firm O’Melveny & Myers LLP, which has built the legal framework for the Artist Services program and participating filmmakers since its inception.

Cougar Town All New Season Premiering on TBS Tuesday January 8, 2013 10PM ET

Cougar Town Makes New Home on TBS in January
Same Cul De Sac, New Network

All-New Season of Hit Series Starring Courteney Cox to Launch Jan. 8

The hit sitcom, Cougar Town is coming to TBS this January as the top-ranked network's newest original series. Cougar Town stars Courteney Cox (Friends, Dirt), Brian Van Holt (John from Cincinnati), Christa Miller (The Drew Carey Show), Ian Gomez (Rita Rocks), Josh Hopkins (Ally McBeal), Busy Philipps (Dawson’s Creek, White Chicks) and Dan Byrd (Easy A). The all-new season is set to premiere Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 10 p.m. (ET/PT),exclusively on TBS.

In Cougar Town, a family of friends keeps things funny as they support each other through the challenges and pitfalls of life – with a little dysfunction and a whole lot of wine. Courteney Cox stars as Jules Cobb, a recently remarried mom who is never far from her wine and her group of friends known as the "cul de sac crew." They include her under-achieving ex-husband, Bobby (Brian Van Holt); next-door neighbor and confidante Ellie (Christa Miller); Ellie's loveably average husband, Andy (Ian Gomez); Jules', neighbor-turned-husband Grayson (Josh Hopkins); and Jules' feisty protégé, Laurie (Busy Philipps). Meanwhile, Jules' 21-year-old son, Travis (Dan Byrd), often proves himself more adult than anyone in the group.

In the new season of TBS's Cougar Town, Jules and Grayson are adjusting to married life just as Jules' son, Travis, tries his hand at being a "playah." Meanwhile, Ellie will head back to work, Bobby jumps back into the dating scene and nosey neighbor Tom (Bob Clendenin – Scrubs, TBS's 10 Items or Less) will try his best to become a part of the crew. Along the way, Jules and her group of friends will wrestle with big life issues, like whether it's considered adultery if a married man hooks up with a sex robot or what kind of courage it takes to stick an arm into a muddy hole in order to catch a catfish barehanded.

Cougar Town was co-created by executive producer Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Spin City) and consulting producer Kevin Biegel (Scrubs). This season, Ric Swartzlander (Gary Unmarried) joins the show as executive producer and showrunner. Courteney Cox and David Arquette also serve as executive producers. Cougar Town is produced by ABC Studios.
