The announcement marks the return to television of broadcast news legend Larry King, who joins Mr. Slim Helú as a co-founder of the network. Ora.TV will be led by Jon Housman, who until recently was the President of Digital Journalism for News Corporation.

LarryKingNow
Ora.TV will create high-quality video programming for digital distribution via a variety of platforms, such that it is seamlessly available on phones, laptops, tablets, connected televisions, and other devices.

Unlike linear cable channels, from its inception Ora (which means "now" in Italian) will be an on-demand network, producing a wide range of stand-alone content that transcends traditional format distinctions.

The company will produce shows that resemble traditional TV in terms of production quality and content but which will be available in a variety of formats, including short-form segments lasting as little as three minutes.

The group is already in talks with potential distribution and technology partners. In addition, Ora is in discussions with other on-air personalities to join King in creating a unique and compelling roster of talent and programming. Several shows are currently in development and will be announced in the coming months.

Carlos Slim Helú is considered one of the world's foremost business leaders with interests in finance, media, telecommunications and other fields. He owns stakes in many companies, including The New York Times, Saks, and is the main investor in Telefonos de Mexico, América Móvil and Grupo Financiero Inbursa. "Ora.TV represents a great opportunity," Carlos Slim Helú said. "The business model is sound and the team brings the talent and industry understanding that will help Ora stand out in digital television, a category which is primed for exponential growth."

Larry King is joining the network having concluded an illustrious 27-year career at CNN. At CNN, he established a reputation as the foremost interviewer of world leaders and the leading source for information on breaking news.

"I am thrilled to be working with Carlos and Jon to create Ora.TV, a bold new model for digital television," King commented. "The backing of Carlos, given his stellar track record in business, combined with Jon's track record of leadership and innovation, is a recipe for success."

"With the exponential burst in video consumption via internet-connected devices, this is an incredible moment to be launching a digital network and studio," according to Jon Housman, Ora.TV's CEO. "Moreover, to create a new network with Carlos Slim and Larry King, arguably two of the most accomplished individuals in the worlds of business and broadcast journalism, is an unprecedented opportunity."

Housman brings more than 15 years of experience in the digital media business to the position. Over the past seven years, he has held a variety of positions at News Corporation, across both its entertainment and news divisions, leading businesses, developing strategy, and directing investments. He was previously the publisher of the Wall Street Journal Europe before its acquisition by News Corporation.

"In addition to traditionally styled programs, we will produce shows in alternative formats and varying lengths so that viewers can find and get information and insights they really care about in ways designed to harness these new mobile and interactive platforms," Housman added. "This approach will allow us to thoughtfully address topics and ideas that might not be as well suited to traditional TV, Additionally, with Ora, we will also be able to incorporate content, social interactions, and technologies in ways that are difficult to pull off with linear platforms."

Housman also hailed the involvement of Larry King, a true TV pioneer.

"Larry King's access to and insight into top newsmakers is simply unparalleled. His experience, his relationships, and his fan base "including millions of Twitter followers" are outstanding assets to help launch a new kind of digital network." Ora.TV will be based in New York City and will be launching programming later this year. www.ora.tv

MTV’S 2013 “VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS” LIVE FROM BROOKLYN'S BARCLAYS CENTER SUNDAY, AUGUST 25TH

[via MTV Press Release]
MTV’S 2013 “VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS” SET TO MAKE HISTORY AS THE FIRST MAJOR ANNUAL AWARD SHOW TO TAKE PLACE IN BROOKLYN LIVE FROM BARCLAYS CENTER ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 25TH

03.25.13

MTV, a unit of Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), is set to make history by bringing the 2013 “Video Music Awards” to Brooklyn, New York for the first time ever. Airing LIVE from Barclays Center on Sunday, August 25, this year’s “Video Music Awards” will mark the 30th anniversary of the show and become the first major annual award show to take place in the borough of Brooklyn.

“From a vibrant musical scene for up and coming artists to epic concerts by today's biggest stars and the triumphant return of pro sports to the borough after nearly 60 years, Brooklyn has re-emerged as a cultural capitol where music, sports and entertainment history is made every day,” said Stephen Friedman, President of MTV. “We can’t wait to help write the next chapter on August 25th, when one of the biggest nights in music happens in Brooklyn… for the very first time.”

“Brooklyn is home to icons like the Cyclone in Coney Island and the Brooklyn Bridge, and now it can lay claim to the MTV ‘Video Music Awards,’” said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. “Bringing the VMAs to Brooklyn will mean hundreds of jobs as crews work on the production and provide a boost to our local economy as attendees stay in hotels, visit local eateries and experience all Brooklyn and our City have to offer.”

MTV's 2013 VMA's Brooklyn BarclaysCenter“MTV’s ‘Video Music Awards’ are the perfect culmination to an incredible inaugural year for Barclays Center,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of Barclays Center. “The VMAs are a symbol of pop culture and have created iconic moments worldwide in music and entertainment. Brooklyn has become an international brand and is the perfect setting for these moments. We can’t wait to share our stage with the world.”

“From hip-hop to hipsters, JAY Z to MGMT, Brooklyn musicians have a long history of dominating the ‘spotlight’ on MTV. Brooklyn is a cultural Mecca—the hippest, coolest place for young people across the country, and has played a crucial role in the careers of some of 2013’s biggest bands, like Fun and the Lumineers,” stated Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.

“Now, it is only fitting that the first time Brooklyn will ever host a major awards show, we are welcoming the most exciting and talked about spectacle in the music industry: the ‘MTV Video Music Awards.’ What better venue than the newest, most beautiful, most state-of-the-art arena in the country, Barclays Center. Bravo to MTV on a decision that hits all the right notes and strikes all the right chords. I’m so thrilled that I’ll probably get ‘no sleep till Brooklyn’ hosts the VMAs!”

MTV Video Music Awards
Since the first “MTV Video Music Awards” aired in 1984, the VMAs instantly earned its reputation for delivering the most popular bands and artists to create the loudest, most influential and at times, the most controversial, annual live celebration of music in the world. No other award show has been responsible for creating more memorable or bigger musical moments in pop culture history than the MTV Video Music Awards. From Madonna, Michael Jackson, Guns N’ Roses and Nirvana to Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Kanye West, an appearance on the VMA stage can forever change the trajectory of an artist’s career in one single night.

The 2012 “MTV Video Music Awards,” broadcast live from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, was the #1 telecast across all TV for the night of September 6, 2012 in P12-34, scoring a 5.3 P12-34 rating with 6.1 million total viewers. Across the Viacom networks (MTV, VH1, MTV2 and Logo) the simulcast of the premiere averaged 8.0 million total viewers. Encore presentations of the 2012 show on MTV earned a 2.4 P12-34 rating at 10:00 p.m., and a 1.2 P12-34 rating at 12:00 a.m., for a total rating of 8.9 for the evening.

At the time, the telecast was also the #1 social TV event of the year according to Trendrr. With more than 19 million mentions, the 2012 VMAs more than tripled the full-day social-media response of 2012’s record breaking telecast. In addition, MTV drove more online streams on this date than any other VMA show ever, and generated nearly a whopping 200 topics trended throughout the night, both in the U.S. and worldwide.

The 2013 “MTV Video Music Awards” will air across MTV’s global network of more than 60 channels reaching more than a half-billion households around the world as well as through syndication. In addition, its convergent programming and content will reach the entire interactive community, via MTV’s more than 200 digital media properties around the world. The 2012 VMAs was one of MTV’s top performers in key markets across Europe, Latin America, Asia and Australia.

Forty years later, the show is leading up to a suspense-filled “killer” wedding between super-couple Victor and Nikki Newman (Eric Braeden and Melody Thomas Scott). This must-see event will be the couple’s fourth trip down the aisle during the history of the show.

CBS' Young & The Restless Celebrates 40th AnniversaryTo highlight this milestone anniversary, Y&R cast members representing all four decades of the show are reaching out across CBS Daytime to celebrate: Scott, along with seven of her co-stars (Peter Bergman, Melissa Claire Egan, Amelia Heinle, Joshua Morrow, Michael Muhney, Michelle Stafford and Kristoff St. John), will appear on CBS’s THE TALK on Monday, March 25. A previous contest, the 40th Anniversary Sweepstakes, was won by Stacey Cifelli of Arlington, Texas. Cifelli and a guest will join the cast of Y&R on set on March 26 to celebrate the anniversary.

“A series airing for 40 years is an incredible feat, but one that has been #1 for the past 24 years as well? ABOUT THE STORY

In the hands of celebrated playwright, screenwriter, author, director and producer David Mamet, PHIL SPECTOR is a mythological story, and he approaches it as such, rather than as a news story. Mamet begins his film with the card, "This is a work of fiction. It's not 'based on a true story.' It is a drama inspired by actual persons in a trial, but it is neither an attempt to depict the actual persons, nor to comment upon the trial or its outcome."

Mamet chose to frame the story through the perspective of the Linda Kenney Baden character, beginning and ending the film with her involvement in the case. Her character's journey is summarized by the question "How do I defend a guy the public does not approve of?" As Mamet explains, "The story is her coming to grips with the notion of what is reasonable doubt, and what is prejudice."

Al Pacino says, "This is the first trial of Phil Spector - when he is first accused of this heinous crime. It's all new to him in terms of the media - their reaction to it - and his introduction to Linda, who is played by Helen Mirren. And it's their relationship, in the course of their preparation for the trial."

Helen Mirren comments, "David sees this story in a more mythological way than as a documentary or docudrama. It's certainly not a docudrama. We are not saying, 'This is what happened, and this is what didn't happen.' We are not saying that. It's a mythological story more than anything. I think whenever you have as extreme a personality as Phil Spector was with the kind of history that he had, he is already vilified. He is made into a monster before any trial begins, so I think that was very much the case with Phil Spector, and it does happen in other cases."

Executive producer Barry Levinson adds, "Here is what the Phil Spector story is not about. It is not an investigation into whether he did or didn't commit the murder. It is not about a trial and how it proceeded and what went on. It's not that type of a film. In a sense, it's really like a two-character piece: Helen Mirren is the defense attorney, and Al Pacino plays Spector. It's the dynamic of those two people. And this woman, who is trying to put the information together, trying to proceed to trial with a guy who at times is half bouncing off walls. That's really where the dynamic of the piece lives."

Defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden serves as a consultant on the film. While many specifics of the trial remain bound by attorney-client privilege, she was able to review the themes that the filmmakers explored. Says Kenney Baden, "David Mamet has brought a unique perspective to this case, and it's been fascinating to watch the process. Al Pacino and Helen Mirren give such amazing performances."

Mamet says, "Like any dramatist, you're just basically a thief, and you take things that you've thought, and things that you've heard, and things that you've seen, and try to apply some structure to them, so that what you're doing is kind of like a psychiatrist - you take these dreams which are seemingly random, and re-order them so that they make dramatic sense."

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

For the New York City-based production, Mamet assembled a gifted team, including Emmy(R)-nominated director of photography Juan Ruiz Anchia, ASC ("American Horror Story"), Oscar(R)-winning production designer Patrizia Von Brandenstein ("Amadeus"), Emmy(R)-nominated editor Barbara Tulliver, A.C.E. (HBO's "Too Big to Fail"), Emmy(R)-nominated composer Marcelo Zarvos (HBO's "Too Big to Fail") and Emmy(R)-nominated costume designer Debra McGuire ("Friends").

Mamet worked closely with production designer Von Brandenstein to imagine Spector's fortress-like manor in the hills east of Los Angeles, juxtaposing a Jean Cocteau-like fantasy world with the very real world of the courtroom. Mamet says, "I thought, well, if basically, the story is 'Beauty and the Beast,' where Helen Mirren is the beauty and Phil Spector is the beast, how does someone decorate his mansion who has got all the money in the world and hasn't left the mansion for 30 years?"

Von Brandenstein explains, "Like many talented people, he has his tremendous enthusiasms that were part of his life for a time and then faded away. But the props remained. So his home reflects that mindset. He collected trophies intensively. He collects - due to a great interest in T.E. Lawrence and his writings - painting, artifacts, furniture of the desert."

Mamet adds, "Each room should be a different fantasy. So, we have one room that's a Lawrence of Arabia fantasy, one room, it's the Oxford University Boat House, 1890. One room is a carnival tent. One room is a Lincoln Room with nothing but Lincoln memorabilia. And as Helen goes in to her first meeting, she goes through a maze, in effect, all these different tests. Like, rooms with painted doors, and rooms with flickering lights, to lead her deeper and deeper into the cave of the Minotaur."

Costume designer Debra McGuire was inspired by the palette of the production design in the creation of the wardrobe for Al Pacino. She explains, "The mansion was very important to me, because the tones for that needed to inform me of what tonally I needed to do with Phil's character. And really without understanding sort of the depth of those colors and burgundies and the darkness, I don't know that I would have been able to really imagine what I was doing."

McGuire adds, "Phil's character has about seven or eight changes. And then, in addition to that, are his interviews, and then the flashbacks. We had to get the eras - the '60s, the '70s, the '80s looks - nailed so that we could really express exactly from the photographs where they were."

Another key element of the creation of Al Pacino's character was Phil Spector's collection of wigs. Mamet says, "Every time Al shows up, he's got a different wig." Pacino's hair stylist Cydney Cornell and wig maker Renate Leuschner created the many different wigs and hair styles featured in the film.

Fashion Star NBC’s Reality Competition Series Launches 2nd Season Friday 3~8~2013 8/7C

NBC Press Release:
NBC’s reality competition series “Fashion Star” launches its second season this spring featuring celebrity mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos and fashion journalist and expert Louise Roe as host. Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue return to the show, with specialty fashion retailer Express joining as the third buyer this season. “Fashion Star” will give 13 eager young designers the chance to win a multi-million dollar prize of launching their original collections in three of the nation’s largest fashion retailers.

Each week, the contestants are given a challenge to design clothing with a certain look, feel and function. Working with their designated team, the mentors offer insight and advice to contestants as they design their creations, shop for materials and oversee the production of their garments. The culmination of their efforts comes with an exhilarating fashion show during which they display their work to the three buyers: Caprice Willard of Macy’s, Terron E. Schaefer of Saks Fifth Avenue and Erika DeSalvatore of Express.

In the show’s most ambitious and dramatic twist, the buyers make on-the-spot decisions to purchase and carry the designs exclusively in their stores – pledging thousands of dollars in orders and often going head-to-head to bid on an item. Those designs become available immediately after the broadcast both online and in select stores the next day. What viewers see on TV that night will be on the streets and in stores in the blink of an eye -- and with just a single trip down the runway, "Fashion Star" can change the lives and fortunes of these aspiring designers forever. Each week, one of the designers is eliminated.

NBC Fashion StarFrom New York and Los Angeles to Dallas and Austin, the designers featured on the show include a talented and inspired group of young professionals, many of whom have held jobs with major design houses and come to the competition having sold their own lines into major retail outlets.

Fashion is a highly competitive and fluid business, however; and the contestants will be challenged to take their “brand” to the next level.

All the contestants will be put to the test to see how they react in a variety of real-world scenarios to determine who has the vision and desire to build a fashion empire and achieve his or her dream.

In the end, one designer will successfully combine fashion and business to become the next "Fashion Star" and will receive the prize of a lifetime –$3,000,000 in orders for capsule collections in Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and Express stores.

"Fashion Star" recently won Best Branded Format at the FRAPA Format Awards at MIPCOM. The series was nominated for a precedent-setting three awards at the annual convention including Best Competition Reality Format, Best Brand-Driven Format and Best Multi-Platform Format. "Fashion Star" also took home Best Social Commerce or Marketing Program at the 2012 Social TV Awards.

The "Fashion Star" format was developed by Ben Silverman of Electus (NBC's "The Biggest Loser," "The Office," and "The Tudors") and Rick Ringbakk of Emmy Award-winning 5x5 Media ("Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution"), and E.J. Johnston and James Deutch of EJD Productions.

The show is executive-produced by Elle Macpherson, Ben Silverman of Electus, Jane Lipsitz and Dan Cutforth of The Magical Elves, Rick Ringbakk of 5x5 Media, and EJ Johnston and James Deutch of EJD Productions. Electus International will retain all international distribution rights.

Vikings New History Channel Scripted Drama Premieres Sunday 3~3~2013 10PM ET

History Channel Press Release: History's New Scripted Series "Vikings" Premieres March 3 at 10 p.m.

Travis Fimmel, Gabriel Byrne, Jessalyn Gilsig, Gustaf Skarsgard, Clive Standen, Katheryn Winnick and George Blagden co-star in the project.

They Were the Fiercest Warriors of All Time...Now The Untold Legendary World of the Mighty Norsemen Comes Alive in HISTORY(R)'s New Scripted Series VIKINGS Premiering Sunday, March 3 at 10 p.m. Travis Fimmel, Gabriel Byrne, Jessalyn Gilsig, Gustaf Skarsgard, Clive Standen, Katheryn Winnick and George Blagden to Star. Created and Written by Michael Hirst.

The word "Viking" has been synonymous with brutality, terror, and mystery ever since the first Norse warriors appeared along the coasts of England and France at the end of the eighth century. Their notoriety for barbarianism without pity was an important part of the mythology that grew up around them. And while Vikings are still characterized as such in popular culture, the reality is much more complex, visceral, and powerful than their reputation suggests.

The extraordinary tales of the lives and epic adventures of these warriors are told in VIKINGS, a new nine-part scripted series premiering Sunday, March 3 at 10 p.m. (ET) on HISTORY(R). The drama portrays the world of these Dark Age raiders, traders, explorers - not from an outsider's view, but, through the eyes of Viking society.

While VIKINGS is filled with conflict, warfare and bloodshed - for these were extreme times - it is a family saga at heart. It follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel, The Beast, Baytown Outlaws), a curious, compelling man who is always looking to break through barriers and discover new worlds to conquer. A young farmer and family man, Ragnar is deeply frustrated by the unadventurous policies of his local chieftain, Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne, In Treatment, Usual Suspects, Millers Crossing), who continues to send his Vikings raiders east every summer, to the Baltic states and Russia, whose populations are as materially poor as themselves.

VIKINGS will chart Ragnar's ambitions to discover civilizations across the great ocean to the west as well as his inevitable conflicts along the way. With the help of his jester friend Floki, (Gustaf Skarsgard, The Way Back), they build a new generation of boats - faster, sleeker and more beautifully crafted than anything else on the sea.

The series will also delve into how the Vikings - the last pagans - worshipped ancient gods like Odin, Thor, Freya and Loki. Ragnar claims to be a direct descendant of the Norse god Odin, who, as well as being the god of warriors slain in battle, is also the god of curiosity.

Joining Fimmel, Byrne and Skarsgard are Katheryn Winnick (Bones, Love and Other Drugs, The Black Marks) as Lagertha, a fierce shield maiden and Ragnar's wife; Jessalyn Gilsig (Glee, Heroes, Nip/Tuck, Friday Night Lights) as Siggy, Earl Haraldson's beautiful wife; George Blagden (Les Miserables, Wrath of the Titans) as Athelstan, a young, innocent Christian monk captured by Ragnar on his first raid on England and Clive Standen (Camelot, Robin Hood) as Rollo, Ragnar's impulsive, wild, care-free brother.

Created and written by Michael Hirst - one of the premier historical story-tellers in the industry (Academy-Award winning film Elizabeth; and the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated series The Tudors), Michael serves as Executive Producer along with Morgan O'Sullivan of World 2000 (The Count of Monte Cristo; The Tudors), John Weber of Take 5 Productions (The Tudors; The Borgias), Sherry Marsh, Alan Gasmer, James Flynn (The Tudors; The Borgias) and Sheila Hockin (The Tudors; The Borgias). Dirk Hoogstra and Julian P. Hobbs are the Executives in Charge of Production for HISTORY.

VIKINGS is an international Irish/Canadian co-production being co-produced by World 2000 and Take 5 Productions. HISTORY will broadcast domestically in the U.S. MGM Television will bring VIKINGS to the global audience, serving as the international distributor outside of Ireland, Canada and the U.S. VIKINGS is produced in association with Shaw Media, and the series will air on HISTORY in Canada.

Argo Wins Best Picture At 85th Annual Academy Awards

As previous visitors to In A Lather know, i have an Oscars® tradition of being a de facto good luck charm for the best picture winner. my habit is to only see one best picture contender, but this year courtesy of KredDolby Laboratories i saw two of the nominees for best picture: Lincoln, and Argo. i enjoyed both immensely but i was more inclined toward Lincoln for the win. my pick was incorrect, but my good luck charm status remains intact, and i'm happy Argo won. Ben Affleck, you had me at the vintage Warner Brothers icon on the opening credits.

i am a native of washington dc and Affleck did my hometown proud in his cinematographic choices. Chris Terrio's academy award winning adapted screenplay captures the rhythm and nuance of the language of the beltway perfectly. When the action shifts to Los Angeles the two previous appraisals of cinematography and script continue to hold true. Prior to Argo winning best picture Mr. Affleck discussed his choices and the reasons for them to give the film a specific look and sound [see the video below Argo Declassified]. Goal achieved.

Argo, based on the true story of six American Embassy workers who were given refuge by the Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor at his private residence in Iran during the hostage crisis. CIA operative Tony Mendez devises a plan to get them out.

With an assist from friends in Hollywood---legendary make-up artist John Chambers [1968's Planet Of The Apes], and his colleague, a revered executive producer with a solid reputation and a knack for getting the impossible done, and the utilization of movie industry trade papers The Hollywood Reporter and show business bible Variety, they concoct an implausible idea and make it plausible: a fake movie that requires a real trip to Tehran for a location shoot. Of course the real reason for the trip is to rescue the six American Embassy workers.

Some criticisms of Argo have been that it is not 100% factual. To those who share that opinion, my response is that while the film's subject matter is based on a true story, this is not a documentary. Besides which, despite it not being a documentary, to my view, given the occurrences of the time it is an accurate depiction. One of many moments that attest to that accuracy is the re-creation of a chilling scene that aired on all the network news channels [SPOILER ALERT!] of a man who had been murdered---he was hung on a crane on a main road---left as a threat/warning to others.[END SPOILER ALERT]

That said i do have one negative but it does not detract from my recommending seeing Argo. That negative is there is no reference to President elect Ronald Reagan. During President Carter's term 52 hostages were in captivity for 444 days. Upon the swearing in of Carter's successor, Ronald Reagan, those hostages were released. At the time the widely held belief was that had Carter been re-elected the hostages would not have been released. Whether or not that belief was shared by the makers of Argo i don't know, but i think the film has a hole in it's story for having no mention of Reagan as a part of the real drama.

Never the less, Argo is intense, suspenseful, funny, exciting, inspiring, exhilarating, and proves the adage that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. Argo, in theaters now and on DVD and BlueRay.
