HBO's True Blood Returns For 5th [And Speculated Final] Season On June 10, 2012

Should fans of HBO's True Blood be excited or wary about the press release announcing the show's June 10th return for a 12 episode 5th season. The announcement, much like character Sookie Stackhouse's otherworldly gifts, is a mixed blessing.

There's speculation that True Blood's 5th season may be it's last, because show runner Alan Ball says he will not be helming a 6th season. Often when a show's creator announces they have decided to call it a day, there is little if any chance of the show continuing when they take their leave. And that is usually for the best, as the creative vision from successors while not necessarily bad, tends to detour from what the established fanbase has come to know and expect. Will True Blood have a 6th season? And if it does, without Alan Ball, will it have the same bite?

Via HBO press release dated 4~4~2012

The 12-episode fifth season of TRUE BLOOD will kick off SUNDAY, JUNE 10 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT). Based on the popular Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris, this Emmy®-nominated hit drama series was created by Alan Ball, creator of HBO’s Emmy®-winning series “Six Feet Under.” The show follows waitress and part-faerie Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), who can hear people’s thoughts, vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and vampire Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård).

Since Alan Ball is leaving True Blood after this season, could this be the last one?
